Woodpile by SH

I find this stacking and piling of wood settling and pleasing. Notice how the pieces are fitted and arranged and ….free standing with the ends being arranged to support the arrangement. Art and detail.

We have only had a few days of snowfall this winter and then a few days later it is mostly melted. It sure is pretty and pristine when it does fall. Happy winter and hopefully spring will soon be here!

Blogging 101…why I blog.

Blogging 101…why I blog.

I have just recently upgraded to a domain and I have decided to do a few Blogging University exercises.

I began blogging to encourage people to get outdoors and walk/hike and also because I like to write. My focus is hiking, nature, photos and my home province of Newfoundland. I believe to really experience Newfoundland (and most places), you need to park your car and walk. I would like to reach people who embrace a simple lifestyle and my main objective, along with having fun, is to show people the great hiking trails and scenery of Newfoundland. I do this through tales, photos, and quotes.

We must take adventures……………….

We must take adventures……………….

………to know where we truly belong.

I never tire of Twillingate.

“Bringing heaven down to earth, into our daily life, is how we rule our world.”  Sakyong Mipham

Not one of my favourite trails, but glad we did it. It took us about an hour but we did all the lookout stops.

Magical Cape Spear

FeaturedMagical Cape Spear

Hiking around the boardwalks and trails of Cape Spear is always beautiful and for me spiritual; hiking it with one of my grandchildren is pure magic.

“Walking gives freedom. When you walk you can determine your own tempo. You can choose your own course. You can think whatever you want.”      Nina Kuscik

Normally, I would agree with this quote but in this case, my four year old grandson chose the tempo and the course, and my thinking was limited to ….stay away from the cliffs, do not lose sight of him, do not run, do not spoil his day with too many warnings……….

Wait for me!

On my previous visits to Cape Spear, I had never explored this!

Surely with this workout, he will sleep tonight!

I truly do not understand people who abuse our earth with excess garbage, it will only sustain us for so long. Awesome is everywhere, let’s preserve it.

Cape Spear, Newfoundland …..add it to your bucket list!

Doctor’s Hill, Comfort Cove NL

Although Comfort Cove is not a hiking destination, it does have many intriguing landscapes to discover and hike. Doctor’s Hill Lookout is one of these. Doctor’s Hill is not high (61 meters, about 200 ft), nor is the trail long, it is however somewhat treacherous.

Sister dear and I  set out early one morning to climb it but could not find the trail!  After spending some time searching for a path, we decided to try and climb straight up the hill. We did manage to get nearly to the top but thought it prudent to return to safety.

Failed attempt to summit!

Defeat is not easy:)

After questioning some of the locals, we learned that one gentleman had climbed to the top on a few occasions and he was kind enough to show us where the trail originated.  So……….

Sister dear is in a much better frame of mind.

Later in the Fall, my husband and I climbed it.

Twillingate is fast becoming my new  favourite place. Its beautiful landscape, amazing trails, thoughtful architecture, vibrant arts community, Crow’s Nest CaféAnchor Inn, Long Point Lighthouse, talented musicians (and yes there are other kinds!) and the new Unscripted Digital Arts Festival all combine to make an outport community that is building a future while maintaining a soul.

Crow's Nest Cafe

Having moved from the city back to the small outport community where I was born, I was a little concerned how I would find places and venues to meet my cultural needs. I had to look no further than Twillingate which has the added bonus of many great hiking trails.

I can still feel the glow on my face, as I sat watching this.
I can still feel the glow on my face.

Almost every evening you will find 5 or 6 photographers from all over the world gathered with their tripods on this little headland by Sleepy Cove trying to capture the sunset, whales, surf, icebergs or just the total experience of this magnificent place.
